"Domains" Explained
Sub-Domains
Unlimited sub-domains are supported on our hosting accounts which allows you to setup URLs like http://blog.mydomain.com/ or http://news.mydomain.com/ . Sub-domains can pull up the same or different content depending on what content they are pointed to within your web hosting account.
Domain Alias
A domain alias is used when you have multiple domain names you want to all point, or direct traffic to the same content on your web site. These are used say in the case where you want the .net and .org versions of your domain to point to the www.domain.com version of your web site.
Secondary Domain
Each of our hosting solutions does provide the ability for running unique content on secondary domains (ie: www.domain2.com), but there are a few limitations in how we implement them:
1) E-mail - Secondary domains become an alias of the primary domain, so bob@primarydomain.com and bob@secondarydomain.com are the same account, so you can not have separate users using the same name across the primary and secondary domains.
2) sFTP - We only provide a single sFTP account, so if you need the ability to allow people to manage files under a secondary domain, but not have access to other content in your account, including your primary domains web files, the secondary domains will need to have their own hosting account.
3) CGI - Our accounts only support cgi's running from the path /public_html/cgi-bin/ so being secondary domains are setup as subdirectories inside of public_html ie: /public_html/www.seconddomain.com/ these secondary domains will not be able to have their own cgi-bin directories, you can always reference the cgi's using the primary domains web address if that will work for your web site setup. If you need secondary domains to have cgi's running fully in their name space, they will need their own hosting account. This does not affect php as we run php as an apache module not a cgi.
4) Web Visitor/Stats - We currently provide a single log file and single Sawmill report for each hosting account, so primary and secondary domain visitor information is all stored in the same log file, and processed in a single report not allowing tracking of which domain actually was accessed, but just overall visitor stats for your hosting account as a whole. We can provide individual log files and Sawmill reports for each secondary domain, please see our Add-ons page for pricing details.
